We are such creatures of habit! Did you know the chocolate milk that you’re preparing for your kids today; they will most likely love for the rest of their lives?  Or what about their favorite pancake recipe? Sometimes I just have to giggle, when I reach for something on a grocery store shelf and remember it used to be in my parents kitchen.  What about you? What’s in your kitchen today that was in your kitchen of yester-year? What was in your kitchen when you were growing up?

I can’t even think of watermelon without remembering my father!  He kept our whole family supplied and was the “Master” at selecting this perfectly ripe fruit. The whole family would gather around when he brought one of these giant beauties home.  Daddy Tom (our grandfather) would pull out his special (extra scary) samurai sword looking knife, as we all waited with baited breath to see the first piece come out looking red, ripe and juicy! I can actually smell the sugary sweet fragrance of that delicious melon right now.

There it was a perfect melon in every way and oozing with lots of juice. It was the watermelon that dreams are made of!  The first few pieces would always go to us kiddies and the rest of the melon was soon to be devoured by all.

Dad was “the Best!” Every melon he ever picked was perfection!  Yum!

Check your fridge and see what is in it now, that was in your parent’s fridge. Well, I’m checking mine now:

  • Crispy fried chicken
  • Coca-Cola (it was always cold and ready to quench our thirst)
  •   Campbell Chicken Noodle Soup (hmmm – hmmm- good)
  • Heinz Ketchup
  • Orange Juice
  • Grits (southern style of course)
  • Chocolate chip cookies
I have all of these things in my kitchen today! This is so funny because they were such a staple in my childhood home. I guess it's true, "the more things change, the more things stay the same. Aren't we glad that "Some things never change!

Bon Appetit!
